Eating Disorders

Eating disorders affect both mind and body. Specialised, non-judgemental care helps rebuild a healthier relationship with food and with yourself.

Eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder and related conditions. They are serious but treatable illnesses that can affect people of any age, gender or body size.

Our approach

Care combines psychiatric assessment, medical monitoring, psychotherapy and family involvement where appropriate, often in coordination with a physician and dietitian. Treatment focuses on physical safety first, then on the thoughts and feelings that drive the eating pattern.

Common signs & symptoms

  • Strong preoccupation with food, weight or body shape
  • Restricting food or skipping meals
  • Episodes of eating large amounts with loss of control
  • Vomiting or misusing laxatives
  • Excessive exercise
  • Significant weight changes
  • Avoiding eating in front of others

How eating disorders is treated

Psychotherapy

Addresses the thoughts and emotions behind the eating pattern.

Medical monitoring

Keeping the body safe during recovery.

Family-based support

Especially important for adolescents.

When should you see a psychiatrist?

Seek help early if eating, weight or body image is causing distress or affecting health. Fainting, rapid weight loss or medical symptoms need urgent attention.
